Exploring the constraints of pixel art with Multipaint.
I’m always fascinating by the digital artists who seek out the specific visual constraints of long-forgotten hardware.
Colin Thomson isn’t merely producing digital art in a “pixel art” style, but using the exact resolution and color palette of the Commodore 64. He doesn’t directly use the original hardware, however, but a Windows/Mac/Linux app called Multipaint that provides an array of Deluxe Paint-style drawing tools and, perhaps more importantly, meticulously calibrated color palettes and graphic modes that replicate those of classic 8-bit and 16-bit machines such as the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amiga, and Atari ST.
